Pinehurst has no official law stating that residents must love golf, but anyone who calls this rustic town home should at the very least appreciate the sport. Nestled among rolling greens and lush hills, sand traps and stately pines, Pinehurst has played an important role in the history of American golf since the Pinehurst Resort opened its doors in 1895. Without Pinehurst, golf wouldn't be what it is today, but without golf, Pinehurst wouldn't either.

Originally named Tuftstown, Pinehurst's lasting name much more accurately describes its peaceful woodland surroundings. The town had an impressive pedigree from the very beginning, with much of the main village designed by Frederick Law Olmsted at the turn of the 20th century. It has remained beautifully preserved and is now designated as a National Historic Landmark District.
