Key historical events like the arrest of Rosa Parks, the subsequent Montgomery Bus Boycott organized by Martin Luther King Jr., and later the march to Montgomery (organized to protest discriminatory voter laws instituted by Governor George Wallace) have since earned Montgomery the nickname the Birthplace of the Civil Rights Movement.

Today, Montgomery is a cultural center in Alabama. The Wynton M. Blount Cultural Park is a vast space that houses the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts and plays host to the Alabama Shakespeare Festival every year. Music legends Nat King Cole and Hank Williams both had roots in Montgomery, and the local Hank Williams Museum still holds the largest collection of Williams memorabilia.
