In Plain Sight: Secret Kitchen Killers

In the second installment of our In Plain Sight series, we are peering at perils in the kitchen.

Beyond sharp knives and hot stoves, the kitchen is filled with potential hazards for your family. Take a look for yourself.

  1. BPA: The main component of polycarbonate, the hard clear plastic used in water bottles, baby bottles, food storage containers, and more, BPA has been linked to a higher risk of certain cancers, reduced fertility, birth defects and diabetes.
  2. Bacteria: The kitchen is the perfect breeding ground for bacteria. Uncooked meat and raw eggs mingle with countertops, cutting boards, and knives, depositing bacterium that lingers longer than you’d think.  Also, consider the spread of bacteria when loading up your reusable shopping bags with potential contaminants.
  3. Non-Stick Cookware:  The coating used on non-stick cookware contains Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), which releases toxic gasses when heated. PTFE has been linked to cancer, organ failure, reproductive damage, and other harmful health effects.
  4. Gadgets & Gizmos: From meat grinders to electric knives, the kitchen is filled with items that can cause irreparable damage and injury. Especially when you don’t use those items often enough to remember exactly how they work. Do yourself a favor and review the directions on your mandolin before slicing a finger along with your fingerling potatoes.
  5. Trash: Food waste and discarded cleaning rags can cause severe poisoning or death if ingested by children or pets. Keep a lid on your trash can at all times, and store it under the sink for extra protection.
